Sancheti Hospital launches OrthoAI, a Revolutionary Generative AI Tool for Orthopaedics

Sancheti Hospital has made a groundbreaking announcement today with the launch of their OrthoAI tool, a generative AI tool that will revolutionize the field of orthopaedics. This innovative tool will provide orthopaedic experts with access to a vast library of medical literature, allowing them to stay updated with the latest advancements and make more informed decisions.

The launch event was graced by chief guest Dr Raghunath Mashelkar, an eminent scientist who praised the hospital’s initiative. Dr Mashelkar highlighted India’s digital leadership in areas such as infrastructure and data consumption, and emphasized the importance of collaboration between healthcare professionals, data scientists, and policymakers to address challenges in the field.

OrthoAI is the outcome of extensive collaboration between Sancheti Hospital’s team of doctors and IT professionals from Pune-based Script Lanes over the past year. This tool is designed to be an evidence-based generative AI for orthopaedics, built on LLM and a cognitive search model. It provides answers to queries with citations to recent literature and related videos, making it an invaluable resource for orthopaedic surgeons.

Dr Ashok Shyam, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon and head of academics and research at Sancheti Hospital, explained the concept behind OrthoAI. He highlighted that decision-making in orthopaedics is typically based on the surgeon’s clinical experience, current literature, and the patient’s needs. However, keeping up with the ever-expanding and dynamic literature can be challenging for surgeons. OrthoAI addresses this challenge by combining literature searches through PubMed with experience-based knowledge from OrthoTV, creating a co-pilot for orthopaedic surgeons in making decisions.

Dr Neeraj Bijlani, another consultant orthopaedic surgeon, emphasized the utility of OrthoAI for complex cases involving older patients with comorbidities or pediatric age groups with congenital abnormalities. Different surgeons employ different approaches to handle complications, and OrthoAI’s extensive literature and shared experiences will provide valuable insights into how other experts are managing similar cases.

Chairman of Sancheti Hospital, Dr Parag Sancheti, spoke about the main objective of this initiative, which is to enhance patient outcomes. By using resources more effectively and tapping into the collective wisdom of the medical community, OrthoAI aims to help orthopaedics deliver the best possible care to patients.

It is important to note that AI is an evolving concept, and the developers of OrthoAI will continuously keep an eye on ethical considerations and safety concerns. This commitment ensures that the tool will evolve over time, aligning with best practices and guidelines to safeguard patient well-being.

The launch of OrthoAI marks a significant milestone in the field of orthopaedics, empowering doctors with cutting-edge medical literature at their fingertips. With the use of AI, orthopaedic surgeons can enhance their decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and contribute to the advancement of their field. The collaborative effort between Sancheti Hospital and Script Lanes showcases the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in driving innovation in healthcare. As we move forward, it will be fascinating to see the continued evolution of AI tools like OrthoAI, shaping the future of medicine.
