Colombo, December 15 – In a groundbreaking move, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced the largest budget allocation in the country’s history for technology, science, and research. The announcement was made at the 100th memorial birthday celebration of Professor Stanley Wijesundara, a distinguished scientist and advocate of innovation.

During his speech at the Temple Trees, President Wickremesinghe stressed the importance of fostering innovation and research in driving the nation’s progress. He recognized the need to bring Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to Sri Lanka, placing a significant focus on advancing scientific and technological research activities. The President virtually inaugurated the “Stanley Wijesundara AI Corner” at the University of Colombo, further underlining the government’s commitment to the advancement of AI technology in the country.

President Wickremesinghe reflected on the violence and tragedy that occurred during the times when Professor Wijesundara was active in academia. He emphasized the need to remember these events and the loss of valuable contributors to education and science. The President expressed gratitude for Professor Wijesundara’s significant contributions to higher education and science, acknowledging his instrumental role in the development of the University of Colombo.

Highlighting the setbacks caused by the loss of Professor Wijesundara and other prominent figures, President Wickremesinghe underlined the need for a robust institutional system that will cultivate a digital and green economy, positioning Sri Lanka as a global player in emerging fields.

Speaking on the growing significance of Artificial Intelligence, President Wickremesinghe emphasized the need for careful handling of AI technology. He announced a budget allocation of 1.5 billion rupees for the next year specifically for AI technology. This marked the beginning of Sri Lanka’s journey to advance its AI capabilities. The President outlined plans to establish the Technology and Innovation Council, which will utilize the allocated funds to drive the commercial applications of technology across various sectors.

President Wickremesinghe concluded his remarks by urging the nation to embrace the changing technological landscape. He emphasized the Government’s commitment to steering Sri Lanka towards a future marked by innovation, sustainability, and global competitiveness.

The memorial celebration of Professor Stanley Wijesundara not only honored a distinguished scientist but also symbolized the beginning of a new era of technological and scientific advancements for Sri Lanka.

In his Birth Centenary Oration on sustainable development, Prof. Mohan Munasinghe highlighted the urgent need to address global consumption rates. He warned that without significant changes, in the next 50 years, the demand will be double the total production of the earth. He stressed the importance of cutting down consumption and finding sustainable solutions to meet the world’s needs.

The historic announcement of the budget allocation for technology, science, and research clearly demonstrates Sri Lanka’s determination to position itself as a driving force in the global AI landscape. As the nation embraces the opportunities that AI technology brings, it is poised to make significant strides in innovation and become a key player in emerging fields.
