TomTom and Microsoft Collaborate on AI-Powered Voice Assistant for Cars

TomTom, in collaboration with Microsoft, is revolutionizing the driving experience with the development of an advanced AI-powered voice assistant for cars. The solution, built into TomTom’s Digital Cockpit, enables drivers to have more sophisticated voice interactions with their infotainment, location search, and vehicle command systems.

The AI-powered assistant, leveraging Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, allows drivers to have natural conversations with their vehicles. They can ask the assistant to navigate to a specific location, find stops along their route, and control onboard systems using voice commands. With just a single interaction, drivers can adjust the temperature, open windows, or change radio stations.

What sets this voice assistant apart is its integration with Microsoft Azure’s AI capabilities, cloud analytics, and automotive reference architectures. The solution utilizes large language models in addition to Azure Kubernetes Services, Azure Cosmos DB, and Azure Cognitive Services. It can also be integrated into other automotive infotainment systems, allowing customers to customize their interface while maintaining their branding and driver experience.

Mike Schoofs, Chief Revenue Officer at TomTom, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Microsoft, saying, “Together with Microsoft, our shared vision is to drive innovation with generative AI and provide our customers with even better solutions. We’re transforming the in-vehicle experience, enabling drivers to ask their car for anything and trust it will deliver.”

Dominik Wee, Corporate Vice President for Manufacturing and Mobility at Microsoft, highlighted the opportunity to accelerate innovation in the automotive sector with the next generation of AI. He emphasized that the collaboration with TomTom will provide drivers and carmakers with new AI-powered tools, enabling OEMs to offer highly differentiated and unique cockpit experiences while preserving their brand identity.

This collaboration between TomTom and Microsoft is a natural evolution of their partnership, which began in 2016 when TomTom started powering Azure Maps location services. The companies later expanded their collaboration to include mapping data and services for Microsoft’s first-party maps. Now, they are working together to drive innovation in the automotive industry, developing generative AI-powered solutions, and creating a digital cockpit and infotainment solution with cloud analytics.

TomTom will be showcasing its conversational AI solution and other projects in collaboration with Microsoft at CES. This opportunity allows attendees to experience firsthand the groundbreaking technology and see how it can transform the driving experience.

With TomTom’s expertise in navigation and technology combined with Microsoft’s advancements in AI, the automotive industry can expect significant advancements in creating a more personalized and intuitive driving experience. As AI continues to evolve, we can look forward to further innovation in the automotive sector.
