Tech design legend Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have joined forces to embark on an exciting new project focused on artificial intelligence (AI) gadgets. The duo has reportedly enlisted the help of Tang Tan, a former Apple executive responsible for designing iconic products such as the iPhone and Apple Watch. Tan will be leaving Apple in February to join Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom, where he will play a pivotal role in shaping the look and capabilities of these AI-centered gadgets.
While details about the specific products remain scarce, insiders reveal that development is in the early stages. What we do know is that Altman will provide the software that powers these AI gadgets, highlighting the collaboration between LoveFrom and OpenAI. The extent to which OpenAI will be involved in the project is yet to be determined.
This venture marks a significant talent loss for Apple, as Tan becomes one of more than a dozen design staffers to follow Ive’s footsteps and depart from the company in recent years. Ive, known for his close collaboration with the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs on groundbreaking product designs, has been busy assembling a team and creating early concepts for this AI device initiative through LoveFrom. After leaving Apple in 2019, Ive established his own design firm, which has now become the hub for this collaboration with Altman and OpenAI.
