Reliance Jio and IIT Bombay develop 'Bharat GPT' AI model

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Reliance Jio Infocomm, India’s largest telecom company, has joined forces with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay to develop an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) model. This revolutionary model, named ‘Bharat GPT’, is set to transform the telecom and retail industries, marking a significant milestone in India’s AI capabilities.

The announcement was made by Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, during his keynote speech at Techfest, an annual science and technology festival hosted by IIT Bombay. Speaking about the project, Ambani stated, “We have been working on a project with IIT Bombay to launch a Bharat GPT program.” He further explained that the collaboration is focused on generative pretrained transformers and large language model-based solutions for the telecom and retail sectors.

Ambani emphasized the immense potential of AI, stating, “We have just scratched the surface with large language models and generative AI, and the next decade will be defined by these applications.” He expressed his belief that AI will revolutionize every aspect of products and services in various industries. Reliance Jio is committed to not only implementing AI within its organization but also integrating it horizontally across all sectors.

To ensure the success of the Bharat GPT project, an alliance of other prestigious institutions, such as IIT Madras, IIT Mandi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad, IIM Indore, and Bhashini (a division of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology), will collaborate with IIT Bombay. Additionally, industry partners including Seetha Mahalaxmi Healthcare Private Limited, led by Dr. Vishnu Vardhan, Reliance Jio, and NASSCOM, have joined forces with the consortium.

The Bharat GPT consortium, led by IIT Bombay, is a unique Public Private Partnership (PPP) initiative. Its mission is to develop India-centric multi-lingual and multi-modal GPT/LLMs (generative pretrained transformers/large language models). The consortium is also working closely with the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) to ensure its alignment with the government’s priorities.

The implementation of the Bharat GPT model is expected to revolutionize the telecom and retail sectors in India. With its advanced AI capabilities, the model has the potential to enhance customer experiences, optimize operations, and drive innovation. By leveraging AI technologies, India aims to establish itself as a global leader in the field and unlock new opportunities for economic growth.

India has been making significant strides in AI research and development over the past few years. The collaboration between Reliance Jio and IIT Bombay represents a major milestone towards advancing the country’s AI capabilities. By harnessing the power of AI, India is not only poised to transform its industries but also contribute to the global AI landscape.

As we step into a new decade, the integration of AI into various sectors will become increasingly crucial. With initiatives like Bharat GPT, India is positioning itself at the forefront of AI adoption, paving the way for a future where AI-driven innovations become the norm. As Akash Ambani aptly put it, “The next decade will be defined by these applications.” India’s journey towards AI excellence has just begun, and the possibilities are immense.
