China Invests $1.4 Billion in New Institute

China has invested over $1.4 billion in a new institute run by former scientists from the Los Alamos nuclear weapons laboratory, aiming to hire top US scientists and obtain advanced American technology. The Eastern Institute of Advanced Study (EIAS) is described as the precursor to the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Ningbo, China. The project is backed financially and politically by the regional Chinese Communist Party. As part of China’s Thousand Talents program, the EIAS and the proposed EIT are designed to hire experienced scientists who can provide knowledge on cutting-edge technology that China has been unable to generate independently. The project has already hired some of the most experienced scientists from the United States.
