President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan recently addressed the annual Digital Bridge Forum in Astana, highlighting the country’s commitment to the development of artificial intelligence (AI). The forum, attended by over 20,000 participants and representatives from 30 countries, solidifies Kazakhstan’s position as a leading digital and fintech hub in the Eurasian region. In his speech, President Tokayev emphasized the transformative potential of AI, comparing it to the revolutionary impact of electricity and the internet. He cited expert estimates that AI could contribute up to a quarter of global GDP, making it a crucial driver of economic growth.
To foster AI development in Kazakhstan, President Tokayev outlined several priorities. The first is the creation of a strategic document that defines the scope, tasks, and tools for AI development. Specifically, the focus will be on implementing AI technologies in sectors significant to the Kazakh economy, such as oil and gas, energy, agriculture, transport, and logistics. President Tokayev also highlighted the importance of developing a legal regulatory framework for AI, which can attract international companies to invest in Kazakhstan. He emphasized the need for a balanced approach that ensures fair competition and protects personal data.
To support AI development, President Tokayev called for the establishment of data centers specializing in AI within two years. He has engaged global players such as Amazon, Google, Mastercard, and Citigroup in this endeavor. Additionally, Kazakhstan aims to create a National AI Platform next year, which will consolidate data from the government and large businesses. President Tokayev also moved forward the deadline for the introduction of the 5G network in Kazakhstan from 2027 to 2025, aligning the country with the global trend towards faster and more efficient connectivity.
In his address, President Tokayev stressed the importance of equipping people with digital skills from a young age. He pointed to the success of initiatives such as the Astana Hub education programs and suggested that similar efforts should be implemented in schools. President Tokayev recognized that the use of AI presents new opportunities for inclusive and sustainable development, emphasizing the need for Kazakhstan to stay ahead of the global competition in this field.
Tim Draper, an American venture capital investor, praised Kazakhstan’s progress in the IT sector. He commended the country for surpassing even the most developed economies, including the United States, in terms of digital solutions. Draper highlighted the success of Kazakh fintech firm Kaspi.kz as a prime example of technological innovation driving the financial sector. He also shared his experiences as an early investor in companies such as Tesla and Skype, emphasizing the importance of seizing opportunities in emerging markets.
TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew also addressed the forum, expressing his excitement about the platform’s accessibility in the Kazakh language. Chew emphasized TikTok’s mission to inspire creativity and bring joy, highlighting the role of AI in facilitating these goals. He acknowledged TikTok’s ability to unite individuals from different countries and cultures, promoting cross-cultural exchange and understanding. Chew cited the successful collaboration between TikTok and Kazakh ministers in promoting Kazakhstan’s scenic beauty through the hashtag #TravelKazakhstan.
President Tokayev’s address and the discussions at the Digital Bridge Forum demonstrate Kazakhstan’s determination to harness the potential of AI. By prioritizing AI development, creating a supportive regulatory environment, and engaging international partners, the country aims to become a leader in the global AI landscape.
