PMI Empowers Project Professionals to Leverage AI

A recent research conducted by the Project Management Institute (PMI) has found that only 18% of project professionals with artificial intelligence (AI) skills have practical experience in the field. PMI, the world’s leading organization for the project management profession, is working towards empowering project professionals worldwide to adopt and leverage AI technologies. PMI is developing tools, resources, and learning opportunities for project professionals, including a free introductory online course called “Generative AI Overview for Project Managers.”

The research also revealed that organizations that prioritize “power skills,” which include interpersonal skills such as communication, problem-solving, collaborative leadership, and strategic thinking, are more successful in completing projects that meet business goals. These organizations waste less investment due to poor project performance compared to the global average. On the other hand, organizations that do not prioritize power skills have higher rates of wasted investment.

The potential of AI and other technologies to automate work activities is significant, but interpersonal skills that project managers bring to projects cannot be automated. PMI emphasizes the importance of continuous learning for project professionals to keep up with the latest developments in AI technology. The organization has created an Artificial Intelligence in Project Management Resource Center on PMI.org, which will serve as the go-to resource for project professionals and organizations seeking to leverage AI tools to improve project success.

The President and CEO of PMI sees an opportunity for project professionals to elevate their leadership role in organizations thanks to the disruption caused by AI. He encourages project professionals to prioritize continuous learning to stay updated on AI technology. PMI will release new articles in October 2023, focusing on how project managers can leverage AI for project productivity and enhance power skills. The organization will continue to provide learning content on AI in project management created by project professionals for project professionals.

As AI becomes more prominent in the project management profession, project professionals will need to embrace experimenting with new tools and connecting with peers for lessons learned. PMI is reimagining how project professionals can balance AI with human ingenuity at its annual event, the PMI Global Summit, which will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, from October 25-28, 2023.

PMI’s efforts to empower project professionals with AI skills and practical experience highlight the growing importance of AI in project management. By prioritizing “power skills” and continuous learning, project professionals can adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing technological landscape. With the right tools and resources provided by PMI, project professionals and organizations can leverage AI to improve project success and remain competitive in today’s digital era.
