Google Selects 11 African Startups

Google recently announced the selection of 11 African startups to participate in its “Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First” program. These startups were chosen from a pool of talented innovators who are using cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to address Africa’s challenges and global issues. The selected startups will undergo a 10-week accelerator journey, during which they will receive mentorship, technical guidance, networking opportunities, and a $350,000 allocation in Google Cloud Credits.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, the Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa, highlighted the transformative power of AI in Africa, citing a McKinsey report that suggests AI could add $1.3 trillion to Africa’s GDP by 2030. Google recognizes the potential of AI and aims to make it easy and scalable for others to innovate with AI. Aiyegbusi stated, “Our chosen startups for the ‘AI First’ program embody this vision, leveraging AI in pioneering ways to address both local and global challenges.”

Adeola Ayoola, co-founder of Famasi Africa, Nigeria, expressed excitement about joining the program and scaling their AI-powered digital health solutions to reach underserved communities. Ayoola mentioned that with Google’s mentorship, they are confident in scaling their solutions and ultimately improving healthcare outcomes.

Japheth Dibo, co-founder of Dial Afrika, Kenya, shared that being selected for the program will allow them to revolutionize customer support in Africa using cutting-edge AI-powered solutions. Dibo expressed their aim to equip businesses across the African continent with the tools to thrive and excel in customer support.

The selected startups include Avalon Health (South Africa), Chatbots Africa (Ghana), Dial Afrika Inc. (Kenya), Famasi Africa (Nigeria), Fastagger Inc. (Kenya), Garri Logistics (Ethiopia), Lengo AI (Senegal), and Izifin (Nigeria), among others.

Google’s commitment to supporting African startups is not new. Since 2017, Google has consistently provided support to African startups through various programs, resulting in a total of $263 million raised and over 2,800 job opportunities created by these startups.

By empowering these selected startups with mentorship, technical guidance, and access to Google’s AI expertise, Google is fostering innovation and driving economic growth in Africa. Through the “Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First” program, Google is not only investing in the success of these startups but also contributing to the advancement of AI technology in Africa.

As the journey begins for these 11 African startups, their potential to make a significant impact on their local communities and the world at large grows. With Google’s support and expertise, they are well-positioned to create innovative solutions that address critical challenges and shape the future of AI in Africa.
