Amazon, the e-commerce giant and tech leader, has unveiled a new and improved version of its popular voice assistant, Alexa. This upgraded Alexa is designed to be more conversational and engaging, marking a significant step forward in the development of AI-powered voice assistants among tech giants like Microsoft and Google. These new capabilities are made possible through a new feature called “Let’s Chat”, where Alexa responds without the need for a wake word, understands the context of a conversation even after a break, and comprehends vague prompts and inferences, making the interaction feel more human-like.
While Amazon has not announced a specific release date for the new Alexa, they plan to conduct an early preview program in the US to allow some users to try out the new capabilities. According to Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, it was expected that Amazon would emphasize the power of its AI assistant, considering the competition from Google and Microsoft. Wood also notes that the success of the upgraded Alexa will depend on Amazon’s ability to encourage consumers to engage with their Echo devices in a different way than they currently do. While some users may find the new features intimidating, if successful, the conversational experience could greatly enhance interactions.
Aside from the improved Alexa, Amazon also unveiled a range of other hardware products at the event, including new Echo smart speakers, smart home hubs, Fire tablets, and updated Fire TV Stick devices.
