AI Seoul Summit: Global Leaders Gather to Discuss AI Safety

The AI Seoul Summit, set to take place on May 21 and 22, will bring together global leaders to discuss the safety of artificial intelligence (AI). Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will co-chair a virtual leaders' meeting with Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on the first day, while the second day will feature in-person meetings co-hosted by Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan and Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho. Industry leaders will also be invited to provide updates on their commitment to AI model safety, including allowing AI safety institutes to test new models before public release.

The AI Safety Summit held at Bletchley Park in November laid the groundwork for this follow-up summit. During the Bletchley Park summit, attendees signed the Bletchley Declaration, which committed countries to developing AI in a safe, trustworthy, and responsible manner. Tech billionaire Elon Musk, who was present at the summit, emphasized the importance of addressing the potential risks posed by AI, stating that it is “one of the biggest threats” to humanity.

Michelle Donelan, the UK Technology Secretary, expressed her confidence that continued international collaboration will enable the responsible and safe development of AI. She looks forward to building on the success of the Bletchley Park summit and continuing the global conversation on AI safety during the AI Seoul Summit. The Republic of Korea has a rich history of technological innovation and is well-positioned to advance the discussions on AI safety.

The summit comes at a crucial time for the AI industry, as new and more powerful AI models are expected to be released in 2024. In conjunction with the summit, the International Scientific Report on Advanced AI Safety will be published, offering an extensive scientific examination of AI safety worldwide.

Korean Minister of Science and ICT Lee Jong-Ho emphasized the need to establish global norms and governance for AI, given its rapid advancement. He hopes that the AI Seoul Summit will not only strengthen international cooperation on AI safety but also foster innovation, inclusion, and sustainable development in the field.

This summit signifies a significant step in addressing the challenges of AI safety and ensuring that AI is developed in a responsible and beneficial way for humanity. By bringing together global leaders and industry experts, the summit will facilitate a crucial dialogue that will shape the future of AI.
