Microsoft’s recent announcement of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its applications is projected to contribute significantly to the 31% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in the AI healthcare space between 2022 and 2027, according to research firm GlobalData. The integration of AI in the healthcare and life sciences (HLS) industry has seen a surge in recent years, with promises of transforming patient care, research, and operational efficiency.
At the 2024 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Global Health Conference and Exhibition, Microsoft unveiled its plans to further integrate AI in its applications through new collaborations, particularly in the medical device space. “The medical devices industry is highly regulated and, as a result, can be slow to adopt new technologies,” says Joselia Carlos, a medical device analyst at GlobalData. “However, leaders in the medical devices industry are realizing the benefits AI can bring, such as aiding physicians in making faster and more reliable diagnostic decisions, data management, and the potential of remote surgery. Many physicians are eager to incorporate AI into their practices.”
GlobalData’s thematic report on Artificial Intelligence in Medical reveals that the AI healthcare space was valued at $4.8 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach $18.8 billion by 2027. The potential of AI in the HLS sector is immense, but it also comes with challenges and considerations that need to be addressed for responsible and effective adoption.
One key concern is data privacy and security. AI systems collect personal data to train AI models and provide personalized patient experiences.
