Nigeria to Create Framework for AI Implementation

In an exciting development for Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced its plans to bring together 120 Nigerian researchers, startups, and stakeholders in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create a comprehensive framework for AI implementation throughout the country. The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, revealed this information in a statement he posted on his X account.

According to Tijani, this team of AI experts will convene at the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy workshop, which is scheduled to take place in Abuja from April 15 to April 18, 2024. Luminate, a global firm dedicated to driving transregional change, will be supporting this workshop. With Luminate’s assistance, the participants will work together to co-create a framework that aligns with Nigeria’s priorities and implementation approach for leveraging AI to improve lives and foster economic growth.

Tijani emphasized the significance of this strategy, stating that it will help deliver the nation’s priorities and implementation approach towards improving lives and growing Nigeria’s economy through the application of AI. He further explained the importance of coordinating and harnessing the power of AI for national development, describing it as a critical element in Nigeria’s journey towards using technology to accelerate productivity.

Recognizing the vast talent pool of Nigerian descent working in the field of AI around the world, Tijani expressed his eagerness to engage with and involve these leading researchers in the country’s initiatives. He highlighted previous collaborations with these talented academics and entrepreneurs, such as the National Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme (NAIRS) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution Technology Application (4IRTA) project, which have focused on mainstreaming the application of AI in various aspects of everyday life.

This upcoming workshop signifies the government’s commitment to unlocking Nigeria’s potential by harnessing the power of AI. The comprehensive framework that will be developed during the workshop will pave the way for significant advancements in sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, and more.

Experts in the field of AI also recognize the importance of this initiative. Professor Ada Nwabudike, a leading AI researcher, shared her enthusiasm for the workshop, stating, “This is a tremendous opportunity for Nigeria to set a clear path forward in utilizing AI for national development. With a collective effort and the right framework, we can address our most complex challenges and improve the lives of millions of Nigerians.”

As Nigeria aims to position itself as a global leader in AI, this workshop marks a crucial step forward. By gathering key stakeholders, researchers, and startups, the government is forging a collaborative environment that will drive innovation and foster growth. With the framework that emerges from this workshop, Nigeria’s potential for technological advancement will undoubtedly be unlocked, ushering in a new era of progress and prosperity.
