Kakao Healthcare Launches AI-Powered Blood Sugar Management Service

Kakao Healthcare, the digital health care unit of Kakao, has made a groundbreaking move in diabetes management with the launch of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered mobile blood sugar management service called PASTA. This service, currently available in Korea, offers real-time blood sugar tracking, food recognition and nutrient analysis, guidance for dietary habits, and analytical reports.

The CEO of Kakao Healthcare, Hwang Hee, highlighted the importance of addressing the rising healthcare costs associated with diabetes. He stated, “Health care costs attributable to diabetes are increasing every year, and we aim to help reduce the costs through our new service.” By leveraging AI technology and continuous glucose monitoring sensors, PASTA enables users to monitor their blood sugar levels and gain a better understanding of their daily habits.

Importantly, PASTA also allows for the sharing of combined analysis with doctors, enabling them to provide more effective and personalized care. Hwang emphasized the platform’s ability to empower users to make informed decisions about their health. He explained, “The so-called ‘lifestyle diseases’ like diabetes have much to do with daily habits. But there have been few options for patients to properly monitor the toxic habits that can increase the risk of diabetes.”

Kakao has taken an innovative approach to increase the adoption of PASTA by not immediately charging fees for the service. Instead, the company plans to share profits from selling the continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) sensors, which they have co-developed with partner companies such as Dexcom and i-SENS. In Korea, patients who require insulin injections can receive a reimbursement of over 70% when purchasing CGM devices. This approach aims to make the service more accessible and affordable to users.

Looking ahead, Kakao has ambitious plans to enhance the PASTA platform. In April, they will introduce Novo Nordisk’s smart insulin pen, allowing users to record their insulin dosing information. The company also intends to develop an upgraded app that encompasses not only blood sugar monitoring but also other diabetes-related complications.

Moreover, Kakao is eyeing expansion into international markets. Hwang hinted at launching the company’s Japan office this year, with plans to introduce PASTA to Japan as the first foreign market. He also mentioned the United States and the Middle East as potential candidate markets. Hwang cited Japan’s similar insurance system to Korea as the rationale for launching the platform there first.

The introduction of Kakao Healthcare’s PASTA service marks a significant step forward in diabetes management. By leveraging AI technology and continuous glucose monitoring, this mobile blood sugar management service equips users with the tools they need to take control of their health. With plans for international expansion and continued development of the platform, Kakao Healthcare is poised to make a lasting impact in the field of diabetes management.
