Sapeon and Advantech Korea Collaborate to Develop Semiconductor for On-Device AI

Sapeon, a fabless startup backed by South Korean telecom-to-chip conglomerate SK Group, has announced a collaboration with Advantech Korea to develop a new semiconductor optimized for on-device artificial intelligence (AI). This partnership comes at a time when the market for AI chips has been experiencing significant growth.

Under the project named Compass, which is being run by the state-run government research institute Korea Planning & Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology, Sapeon has been selected to receive support in developing prototypes for commercializing AI chips. The collaboration aims to strengthen Korea’s semiconductor ecosystem by leveraging the country’s highest level of AI technology capabilities and infrastructure.

Ryu Soo-jung, the CEO of Sapeon, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We will strengthen the semiconductor ecosystem by securing Korea’s highest level of AI technology capabilities and infrastructure.” The project involves matching companies in the system chip industry with chip suppliers and providing development expenditures.

The focus of this collaboration between Sapeon and Advantech Korea will be on the high-powered edge AI computing market. Edge AI combines edge computing and AI, allowing machine learning tasks to be performed directly on connected edge devices. This approach enables faster processes without the need to connect to the cloud or offsite data centers.

Sapeon will utilize its existing data center-based AI chip technology development capabilities to design an edge server card. On the other hand, Advantech Korea will be responsible for developing an edge server equipped with Sapeon’s chips, which are backed by the SK Group.

This collaboration between Sapeon and Advantech Korea is set to revolutionize the field of edge AI. By developing a new semiconductor optimized for on-device AI, these companies are at the forefront of advancements in the industry.

This announcement comes at a time when the demand for AI chips is rapidly increasing. As AI continues to be incorporated into various applications, having efficient and powerful on-device AI processors is crucial. The collaboration between Sapeon and Advantech Korea will play a significant role in meeting this demand and driving innovation in the field.

In conclusion, Sapeon and Advantech Korea’s collaboration to develop next-gen semiconductors for edge AI computing marks a significant milestone in the field of AI chip development. By leveraging Korea’s AI technology capabilities and infrastructure, these companies are poised to revolutionize the industry and meet the growing demand for on-device AI processing power.
