IIT Kharagpur and Ericsson Partner to Advance 6G Research

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) and Ericsson have come together to embark on a groundbreaking collaboration in the field of AI, compute, and radio. These two institutions have signed agreements that will enable their researchers to work together on the development of cutting-edge AI and distribute compute technology for the advancement of 6G research.

This momentous collaboration was marked by a symposium on radio and network research, held at the GS Sanyal School of Telecommunications (GSSST). Leaders from both Ericsson Research and IIT Kharagpur participated in this event to discuss the future of networks and communication.

The partnership between these two organizations is a crucial step in the development of Ericsson’s 6G networks. AI and compute research play a vital role in the efficient management of compute offload at the edge, and the policies driving this process are largely governed by AI.

The research themes of this collaboration align perfectly with the goals of IIT Kharagpur. Both institutions see this partnership as an opportunity to expand the boundaries of fundamental and applied research in the radio domain. With this collaboration, IIT Kharagpur aims to contribute to various aspects of 6G networks, including radio access technology, core network, RF and device technologies, VLSI Design, neuromorphic signal processing, and services and applications.

Dr. Virendra Kumar Tewari, the Director of IIT Kharagpur, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration by stating, “In the commitment towards Digital India and making India the hub of technological innovation, this collaboration with Ericsson will be effective for next-generation technology significantly. 6G networks integrated with artificial intelligence will enable AI-powered applications to run faster and more efficiently.”

The ambitions of IIT Kharagpur in the 6G era extend beyond research and development. In addition to their contributions to cutting-edge technologies, the institute is also looking forward to participating in the telecommunications standardization process, developing test beds, prototype development, commercialization, training, and manpower development. This holistic approach to collaborative research will undoubtedly transform future network platforms.

This collaboration between IIT Kharagpur and Ericsson represents a significant step forward in the advancement of AI, compute, and radio technologies for 6G networks. By combining their expertise in these fields, these two institutions are poised to push the boundaries of innovation and shape the future of networks and communication. With the power of AI and compute, 6G networks will revolutionize the way applications run, providing faster and more efficient experiences for users.
