Tyler Perry Raises Alarm about AI’s Potential Impact on the Film Industry: Jobs at Risk
Atlanta-based film and TV mogul Tyler Perry recently hit the pause button on his $800 million expansion of his studio complex after witnessing the capabilities of OpenAI’s video generator, Sora. Perry expressed concern that “a lot of jobs” in the film industry are at risk of being lost to artificial intelligence. Sora, an AI tool developed by OpenAI, garnered attention for its ability to produce minute-long, highly realistic footage based on simple text prompts. Perry, known for his successful Madea film series, was taken aback by Sora’s achievements, stating, “I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me.”
The demonstrations released by OpenAI showcased Sora’s ability to create photorealistic scenes upon receiving prompts like capturing people walking through a “beautiful, snowy Tokyo city” with sakura petals and snowflakes in the wind. Perry believes that Sora’s breakthroughs will have wide-ranging effects on various roles within the film industry, including actors, editors, sound specialists, and transportation crew.
Expressing his worry, Perry emphasized, “I am very, very concerned that in the near future, a lot of jobs are going to be lost. I really, really feel that very strongly.” He cited construction workers and contractors as immediate examples of roles that may become redundant as a result of AI’s capabilities. Perry also disclosed his personal use of AI technology in two of his recent films, where the technology was employed to age his face and reduce time spent in the makeup chair.
The potential impact of AI on jobs has been a subject of concern in the entertainment industry, leading to strikes by Hollywood actors and writers. While peace deals addressing the use of AI were reached in these disputes, Perry believes a comprehensive approach involving all industry stakeholders is necessary to protect jobs. He stressed, “It can’t be one union fighting every contract every two or three years. I think that it has to be everybody, all involved in how do we protect the future of our industry because it is changing rapidly, right before our eyes.”
The film industry has long relied on the unique skills and creativity of human talent. However, the emergence of AI tools like Sora raises questions about the future of traditional filmmaking processes and job security. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for the industry to adapt and find ways to harness AI’s potential while safeguarding the livelihoods of those working in the field. The concerns raised by Tyler Perry serve as a wake-up call for the industry to come together and explore innovative solutions to address this challenging yet transformative landscape.
