Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s leading tech companies, has announced its partnership with other industry giants to form the AI-RAN alliance. This alliance aims to drive innovation and efficiency in sixth-generation (6G) technology through the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and wireless communication technologies. The launch took place at the Mobile World Congress 2024, the largest mobile tech show in the world, held in Barcelona, Spain.
The AI-RAN alliance consists of 10 telecommunications and software companies, as well as one university, as its founding members. Alongside Samsung, notable members include Nvidia, Arm, SoftBank, Ericsson, and Nokia, among others. The alliance is divided into three working groups: AI for radio access networks, AI and RAN, and AI on RAN. These groups will carry out specific research tasks to further the development of 6G technology.
Samsung has announced its participation in all three working groups, underlining its commitment to the advancement of this technology. The AI for RAN group will focus on optimizing wireless communication using AI and machine learning, with the aim of improving frequency, costs, and energy efficiency. The AI and RAN group will concentrate on developing efficient resource management and maximizing infrastructure utilization in wireless networks. Finally, the AI on RAN group will explore new AI applications and services within wireless networks.
Samsung’s involvement in the AI-RAN alliance reflects its dedication to leading 6G research and expanding the ecosystem surrounding it. By incorporating AI into wireless communication technology, the company aims to drive service innovation and enhance the efficiency of communication networks. Charlie Zhang, Senior Vice President at Samsung Research America, expressed optimism about the alliance’s potential, stating, “We believe this coalition will create new value for end users and operators through AI-based use cases and innovations.”
This announcement is not the first for Samsung in the realm of next-generation communication technology. In May 2019, the company established the Advanced Communications Research Center (ACRC). Under its research organization, the ACRC has produced various publications, including the 6G white paper in July 2020 and the 6G spectrum white paper in May 2022. Samsung has been actively involved in research and development, as well as nurturing the ecosystem, to strengthen its position in the forthcoming 6G communication market.
The AI-RAN alliance’s collaboration and research efforts are expected to contribute significantly to the standardization and commercialization of 6G. The technical reports and white papers resulting from their work will aid in the discovery of new services and specifications for this advanced technology. As Samsung continues to lead the charge in 6G research, exciting developments and advancements in AI and wireless communication technology are on the horizon.
