Seán O’Sullivan, a fifth-year student from Coláiste Chiaráin in Croom, Co Limerick, is making waves in the world of technology. At the 60th BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, he took home the prestigious overall award for his groundbreaking work in author authentication using artificial intelligence (AI).

O’Sullivan’s winning creation, VerifyMe, offers a fresh perspective on authorship attribution in the era of AI. The software employs machine learning technology to isolate the unique writing style of individual authors. By analyzing past examples of an author’s writing and comparing them to a new piece, VerifyMe can determine whether the same author wrote it.

The significance of this innovation cannot be understated. As AI continues to develop and play a more significant role in our lives, the ability to authenticate authorship becomes increasingly important. O’Sullivan’s VerifyMe addresses this need by providing a reliable and efficient method for identifying the true authors behind written content.

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition showcased the talents of more than 1,100 students from 219 schools. Out of the 550 projects on display, O’Sullivan’s VerifyMe stood out among the competition. A prestigious judging panel consisting of 85 experts from the fields of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) selected O’Sullivan as the winner of the overall award.

O’Sullivan’s achievement comes with a prize of €7,500 and the opportunity to represent Ireland at the EU science competition (EUCYS) in Katowice, Poland. This international platform will allow him to showcase his groundbreaking work on a broader scale and compete with the brightest minds from across Europe.

In discussing his project, O’Sullivan emphasized the potential applications of VerifyMe in the real world. He stated, “With the rise of AI, the ability to determine authorship will be crucial in fields such as journalism, legal proceedings, and even online content authenticity. VerifyMe is an important step towards ensuring transparency and trust in this new era.”
