The world of artificial intelligence (AI) software development is about to become more accessible and efficient, thanks to a new partnership between Google Cloud and Hugging Face. This collaboration aims to simplify the process of developing AI software on Google Cloud, enabling businesses of all sizes to harness the power of AI to improve their products and streamline internal operations.
The growing interest in AI software development has been fueled by the recent launch of generative AI tools by tech giants like Microsoft and Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Companies are realizing the potential of AI to enhance their existing products or to meet specific internal needs. However, creating AI software optimized for a particular task or requirement can be complex.
Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, explained the reason behind the partnership, stating, “It shows we are moving into a world where there’s not just one model, but there as many models as companies. Every company is training, fine-tuning, and optimizing their own models, which is the direction that the field is taking.”
The demand for cloud-based AI computing has been on a sharp rise, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian predicts that it will soon surpass the traditional cloud software market. He stated, “It always starts infrastructure up because you first got to put in the machines that reflect the demand - and grow from there.”
Under the revenue-sharing agreement, developers using Google Cloud’s technical infrastructure will have access to Hugging Face’s repository of open-source AI software, including models and data sets. Hugging Face has become a leading hub for open-source AI software and previously collaborated with Amazon’s cloud unit in a similar partnership.
Kurian highlighted that the partnership emerged from the growing interest among cloud customers to modify or build their own AI models instead of relying on pre-built options. This allows companies to ensure specific safety frameworks are in place to protect against data leakage and to evaluate the quality of the model being used.
The collaboration with Hugging Face comes at a time when their repository of AI-related software is set to rapidly expand. In just four months, the repository will approximately double in size, compared to the four years it previously took to reach its current state, according to Delangue.
Developers using the Google Cloud infrastructure will also have the opportunity to leverage advanced AI chips. They can utilize Google’s in-house developed AI chips or tensor processing units. Additionally, Google is integrating Nvidia’s highly sought-after H100 AI chips into its infrastructure, which will be available in a matter of weeks, not months.
This partnership between Google Cloud and Hugging Face marks a significant step forward in simplifying AI software development. It offers businesses the tools and resources they need to create customized AI models for their specific needs. With the rapid advancements in AI technology and the growing demand for cloud-based AI computing, this collaboration sets the stage for further innovation in the field.
