Chinese GPU start-up Moore Threads is defying US restrictions by upgrading its artificial intelligence (AI) data center solution, KUAE. The upgrade allows for up to 10,000 GPUs to be connected in a single computing cluster, providing infrastructure for China’s AI innovation. In addition, Moore Threads has secured 2.5 billion yuan in financing to support its expansion. This news comes as Chinese companies face export restrictions on advanced AI chips due to US national security concerns.
Founded in 2020 by a former Nvidia China veteran, Moore Threads has been making strides in the GPU sector in China. Despite being added to a US trade blacklist in 2023, the company remains determined to catch up to Nvidia in terms of product performance. Nvidia currently leads the market with its A100 GPU, which offers significantly higher computing power than Moore Threads' MTT S400 GPU.
However, Moore Threads is not backing down. Its new upgrade allows for enhanced connectivity between GPUs using its MTLink technology. This enables multiple GPUs to be interconnected, forming a more powerful system. The company has also signed deals with state-run telecoms operators China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Energy Engineering Corporation, as well as Gulin Huajue Big Data Technology, to build three computing cluster projects.
The upgrade to KUAE is a significant step forward for Moore Threads, as it overcomes the challenges posed by US export restrictions. By boosting the number of GPUs that can be connected in a single computing cluster, the company is providing the necessary infrastructure for China’s burgeoning AI industry.
In a statement, Moore Threads emphasized the importance of the upgrade: “This upgrade allows us to further support China’s innovation in AI and contribute to the country’s technological development. We are confident that our enhanced capabilities will help bridge the AI gap and propel China’s AI industry forward.”
Despite the progress made by Moore Threads, it still has a way to go to match Nvidia’s product performance. Nvidia’s A100 GPU offers superior computing power, with specifications that surpass those of Moore Threads' MTT S400. However, with its determination and ongoing investment, Moore Threads is positioning itself as a strong contender in the Chinese market.
As the AI race continues between the US and China, companies like Moore Threads are finding innovative ways to overcome obstacles and further develop AI technologies. With the upgrade to KUAE and the securing of financing, Moore Threads is solidifying its position in the AI industry and contributing to China’s technological advancement.
It will be interesting to see how Moore Threads continues to evolve and compete in the years to come. As the world becomes increasingly reliant on AI technologies, there is a growing demand for companies that can provide powerful and efficient solutions. Moore Threads is well on its way to meeting that demand and shaping the future of AI in China.
