Artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has recently announced that General Paul Nakasone, a former top U.S. cyberwarrior and intelligence official, will be joining its board of directors. OpenAI hopes that Nakasone’s extensive experience will help protect the company from the growing threat of “increasingly sophisticated bad actors.”
Retired Army General Paul Nakasone previously served as the commander of U.S. Cyber Command and the director of the National Security Agency (NSA). His addition to OpenAI’s board comes after a period of upheaval at the company, which resulted in a reset of the board’s leadership last year. The previous board had fired CEO Sam Altman, only to reinstate him days later after an outside investigation.
OpenAI, while technically a nonprofit, also governs its rapidly expanding business. Nakasone’s appointment is seen as a strategic move to bolster the company’s security measures. He will also be joining OpenAI’s new safety and security committee, which advises the board on critical safety and security decisions regarding projects and operations.
Nakasone’s experience in leading the Army branch of U.S. Cyber Command along with his role as director of the NSA makes him a valuable addition to OpenAI’s board. He held these positions during then-President Donald Trump’s administration and continued in his role when President Joe Biden took office in 2021. Nakasone ultimately retired from his position in February of this year.
With Nakasone’s expertise in cybersecurity and intelligence, OpenAI aims to strengthen its defenses against potential threats.
