Tainan to Establish State-of-the-Art AI Industrial Park

A new era of artificial intelligence (AI) is set to take off in Tainan, Taiwan, with the development of a state-of-the-art AI industrial park. Premier Cho Jung-tai recently visited the site of the Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City project and expressed his belief that this park would serve as the foundation for Taiwan’s AI revolution. Cho stated that this development will not only promote the growth of AI as an industry but also enable its application in various sectors.

The Shalun Smart Green Energy Science City project is composed of two key buildings: the CyberSecurity and Smart Technology R&D Building and the Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site. These establishments mark the beginning of the science city’s AI journey. However, plans for the AI park extend far beyond these initial components. The park is expected to include data centers, as well as specialized areas for zero-carbon technologies, quantum science, smart agriculture, smart transportation, and smart medicine.

Premier Cho emphasized that the establishment of this park aligns with President William Lai’s vision of supporting “Five Trusted Industry Sectors”: semiconductors, AI, defense, security and surveillance, and next-generation communications. Companies such as Nvidia and AMD have already expressed their plans to expand their presence in Taiwan, and the government recognizes its role in providing the necessary infrastructure to support their investments. This new industrial park not only forms a vital connection between Tainan and northern Kaohsiung but also contributes to the creation of a “southern smart corridor.”

Northern Kaohsiung, in particular, has seen the emergence of high-tech parks in recent years. The Northern Kaohsiung Industrial Park project, which commenced construction last year, and the Ciaotou Science Park, focused on attracting semiconductor, smart machinery, and space-related companies, are just a few examples. Additionally, the Nanzih Technology Industrial Park is set to house a fab facility for advanced 2-nanometer wafer production by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.

The National Science Technology Council, one of the agencies overseeing the AI park, is committed to expediting the development of data centers. They also plan to collaborate with top international enterprises to transform Shalun into a leading AI R&D hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che further noted the advantages of having AI research institutes at National Cheng Kung University and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University’s Tainan Campus in close proximity to the AI park. He believes that these institutions will benefit from each other’s expertise, ultimately benefiting not only Tainan but also other cities in the southern region of Taiwan.

The construction of the AI industrial park in Tainan marks a significant milestone in Taiwan’s AI journey. As the government continues to prioritize the growth of trusted industry sectors, this development will undoubtedly contribute to the nation’s AI revolution. With the support of leading tech companies and the collaboration between research institutes, Taiwan is poised to become a prominent force in AI research and development. The future is bright for Taiwan’s AI industry, and the AI park in Tainan is at the forefront of this exciting revolution.
