China's Leading Companies Showcase AI Technology at Mobile World Congress Shanghai

The future of artificial intelligence (AI) was the talk of the town at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai, as China’s leading companies unveiled their latest products and visions for an AI-driven future. Honor, a smart device brand, showcased technology that can detect deepfake scam calls in real-time.

Deepfake scam calls have become a growing risk as generative AI use becomes more prevalent. In one infamous case, a Hong Kong finance worker transferred $26 million to fraudsters who manipulated video and sound to pose as his colleagues. Honor’s technology aims to combat this threat by using AI to analyze elements like eye contact or lighting frame by frame, identifying imperceptible flaws within seconds.

Honor’s CEO, George Zhao, believes that on-device AI has the potential to empower users and address concerns about authenticity. He unveiled the technology in a demo video, showing how it can detect a face swap during a video call.

The AI revolution is unstoppable, according to high-profile speakers at the conference. David Wang, Huawei’s Executive Director of the Board, emphasized the need for AI to be omnipotent and everywhere. He highlighted the crucial role of telecom networks, particularly 5G and its successors, in supporting the ongoing success and expansion of AI.

However, there are challenges that need to be addressed for AI to reach its full potential. Processing power and heat management are key issues. Sue Ryan, Vice President of Marketing at Frore Systems, pointed out that consumers want devices to be smaller and smaller, making it difficult to fit all the necessary processing energy. Frore Systems has developed AirJet, a cooling device in the form of ultrathin chips, to tackle this challenge.

Lara Dewar from organizers GSMA spoke about the significant role AI is playing in the connectivity sector. AI has transitioned from being in the background to taking the driver’s seat, she noted. The exhibition showcased AI-powered cars as the Internet of Things expands further into the auto sector.

Dewar firmly believes that AI will reshape our lives and businesses. With ongoing advancements in AI technology and the commitment of companies like Honor, the future of AI looks bright and promising. As AI becomes more embedded in our daily lives, it is crucial to develop the necessary infrastructure, including robust telecom networks, to support its growth and potential applications.
