A group of current and former employees at leading artificial intelligence (AI) companies, including OpenAI and Google DeepMind, have raised concerns about the risks posed by the emerging technology. In an open letter, the group highlighted the financial motives of AI companies as hindering effective oversight and warned of the potential dangers of unregulated AI.
“We do not believe bespoke structures of corporate governance are sufficient to change this,” the letter stated. It further cautioned against the risks of unregulated AI, which include the spread of misinformation, the loss of independent AI systems, and the deepening of social inequalities. The group even went so far as to suggest that unregulated AI could lead to “human extinction.”
This open letter is not the first to raise safety concerns around generative AI technology, which has the ability to produce human-like text, imagery, and audio quickly and inexpensively. Researchers have already discovered examples of image generators, developed by companies like OpenAI and Microsoft, producing photos with voting-related disinformation, despite company policies against such content.
One of the key issues raised in the letter is the lack of obligation for AI companies to share information with governments about the capabilities and limitations of their systems. The group argues that AI firms cannot be relied upon to share this information voluntarily and calls for stricter regulations and oversight.
The letter also calls for AI companies to facilitate a process for current and former employees to raise risk-related concerns and criticizes the enforcement of confidentiality agreements that prohibit criticism. This indicates a need for transparency within the industry and a recognition that employees play a crucial role in identifying and addressing potential risks.
In a separate development, OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, recently announced that it had thwarted five covert influence operations seeking to exploit its AI models for “deceptive activity” across the internet. This further highlights the urgent need for vigilance and strong safeguards in the use and development of AI technologies.
The concerns raised by these current and former employees of leading AI companies shed light on the potential dangers of unregulated AI. As the field of AI continues to advance rapidly, it is crucial that ethical considerations and robust oversight mechanisms are put in place to ensure the responsible development and use of this powerful technology. By listening to the voices of those within the industry who are sounding the alarm, we can work towards a future where AI benefits humanity without compromising our safety and well-being.
