Lenovo Group, the Chinese computer giant, is taking its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) to new heights. The company has recently unveiled a series of servers and computers powered by technology from US chip designer Nvidia, in a bid to provide AI solutions to businesses and cloud service providers.
Lenovo’s collaboration with Nvidia has resulted in the addition of two new Nvidia graphics-processing-unit (GPU) systems to its AI server series, ThinkSystem. These servers are specifically designed to support professional users in developing generative AI and large language models, which are the underlying technology for popular AI tools like ChatGPT.
Through this collaboration, Lenovo’s server clients can now access Nvidia’s enterprise-facing generative AI software. In addition, Nvidia has introduced “microservices”, a set of tools that enable developers to create and deploy custom generative AI applications.
Nvidia, a leading supplier of GPUs used in AI models, is experiencing high demand for its processors as companies worldwide, including China, are increasingly focused on building and deploying generative AI models and related applications.
Lenovo’s commitment to AI doesn’t end with servers. The company has also announced new computer workstations that come pre-installed with Nvidia GPUs and software. These workstations serve the needs of industrial users, scientists, and developers in generative AI tasks. This move is part of a partnership struck between Nvidia and Lenovo in October.
With plans to roll out its first-generation AI PCs in the first half of this year, Lenovo is aiming to “dramatically expand” its portfolio of AI devices through 2025. The company, which is already the world’s largest personal computer (PC) maker, is investing heavily in AI research and development. Last August, Lenovo pledged to invest $1 billion over three years to accelerate AI deployment for businesses globally.
Lenovo’s focus on AI is reflected in its R&D efforts. The company has increased its R&D headcount by more than 25% last year and is projected to have a record-high R&D expenses-to-revenue ratio for the full year. With operations in over 180 markets worldwide, Lenovo is determined to be at the forefront of AI innovation.
By partnering with Nvidia and integrating powerful GPUs into its servers and workstations, Lenovo is empowering businesses and developers to harness the power of AI. With these new offerings, Lenovo is positioning itself as a leader in the AI industry, catering to the growing demand for AI solutions across various sectors.
