Artificial intelligence (AI) has become a topic of great significance and concern for many states and governments around the world. Massachusetts, known for its technological advancements and prestigious universities, has taken a proactive approach to ensure a safe and leading future of AI. Governor Maura Healey has established an Artificial Intelligence Strategic Task Force, consisting of prominent tech experts and leaders from top universities across the state.
One of the task force members, Usama Fayyad, the Executive Director of Northeastern University’s Experimental AI, highlighted Boston’s historical connection with AI. “Boston, in general, was one of the leading spots for AI,” he said. “For I would say a couple of decades, in the very beginnings of artificial intelligence.”
The task force’s primary objective is to discuss the future of AI and devise strategies to maintain a competitive edge. Governor Healey expressed the importance of reclaiming the state’s leadership in this field. “Why have we let this lead slip away from our state and how do we bring it back in a big way?” she questioned. The task force aims to identify areas of strength in which Massachusetts can excel.
Fayyad emphasized the potential of AI to advance various industries and sciences if used correctly. However, he also highlighted the importance of cautious implementation. “Thinking carefully about how do we do these things but do them the right way and how do we achieve these advantages but do it in a safe way will allow us to win the race,” he warned.
Massachusetts' approach to forming an expert task force demonstrates the state’s commitment to responsible innovation and the ethical implications of AI. By bringing together leading voices in the field, the task force aims to develop comprehensive recommendations to guide the future development and deployment of AI technologies.
The task force is expected to present its final recommendations to Governor Healey later this year. Their insights and expertise will play a crucial role in shaping the state’s approach to AI, ensuring that Massachusetts remains at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field.
