Chinese AI company Moonshot AI has announced that its chatbot Kimi can now handle up to 2 million Chinese characters in a single prompt, surpassing the capabilities of other AI tools. The Beijing-based start-up, also known as Yuezhi Anmian, stated that this new feature is currently in beta testing for invited users before a wider release. Moonshot AI built the chatbot using its own Kimi large language model (LLM), which had previously been limited to handling 200,000 Chinese characters in a context window. Moonshot AI’s engineering vice-president, Xu Xinran, believes that the expansion of the LLM’s context window size will open up new possibilities for AI applications, such as code analysis and multimodal models.
Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin has previously highlighted the importance of processing long prompts for the future development of AI models. With this update, Moonshot AI’s Kimi has surpassed the prompt capacity of Baichuan, a company founded by Sogou founder Wang Xiaochuan. In October 2022, Baichuan’s Baichuan2-192k LLM was capable of handling approximately 350,000 Chinese characters in a context window. Moonshot AI has been making waves in the Chinese AI market, securing the largest single financing round for a Chinese AI start-up since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022.
In a recent funding round, Moonshot AI raised over $1 billion, with support from e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding and venture capital firm HongShan. This funding round led to Moonshot AI being valued at around $2.5 billion. At a recent event, Moonshot AI demonstrated the capabilities of Kimi’s expanded prompt capacity. The chatbot can now provide medical consultations after analyzing a Chinese medicine handbook, as well as offer stock market advice on Nvidia based on years of financial reports from the AI chip giant.
