Douyin Bans AI-Generated Content to Promote Responsible Use of AI

Douyin, the popular Chinese short video app and cousin to TikTok, is taking a bold step towards responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). The platform announced that it will ban the use of AI-generated content (AIGC) that spreads rumors or misinformation. This move comes at a crucial time as China aims to catch up to the United States in the field of AI. The Chinese government heavily censors content on social media platforms to maintain control and regulate dissenting views, making it necessary to regulate the use of AI.

Owned by ByteDance, the same company behind TikTok, Douyin is intensifying its focus on AI as this technology rapidly evolves. Chinese experts have emphasized the need for regulations to ensure the orderly development of the AI industry. Liu Dingding, a technology industry observer, said, “With the quick development of AIGC, it is essential to have regulations in place to label the content and make clear the accountability.”

Douyin’s crackdown on accounts misusing AI to create virtual humans for inappropriate content highlights the potential dangers of content manipulation. As part of a broader five-point regulation, Douyin is urging responsible use of AI not just from its creators, but also from its users and merchants. The platform’s new guidelines require publishers to clearly mark content generated by AI to help users differentiate between virtual and reality.

The regulatory landscape for AI in China is evolving, with the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and six other ministries introducing temporary rules last year to promote the sound development of the sector. The CAC recognizes the rapid development of AI as presenting both opportunities and challenges, such as misinformation and infringement of personal rights.

ByteDance, the parent company of Douyin, is actively engaging in the moderation and exploration of AI. It has noted an increase in job openings related to AI and has launched new tools in this field. By positioning itself alongside leaders like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Sora, ByteDance is showing its commitment to staying ahead in the AI landscape.

As tensions between China and the United States prevail, Douyin’s regulatory measures reflect the Chinese technology giants' determination to maintain control and stay at the forefront of AI development. With more than 320 job openings related to AI recently listed, ByteDance is making significant moves in the AI space through its expansion and innovation in GenAI.

Douyin’s ban on AI-generated content that spreads rumors or misinformation is a significant step towards responsible use of AI in China. By taking action to regulate and mark content generated by AI, the platform is setting a precedent for the responsible use of this technology. As AI continues to develop and impact various aspects of our lives, it is crucial that regulations are in place to ensure its ethical and responsible use.
