Dubai is taking great strides in unlocking the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in its government sector. In a recent gathering called the AI Majlis, representatives from 33 government entities came together to collaborate, exchange knowledge, and foster innovation in the field of AI. This initiative is part of the Dubai Centre for Artificial Intelligence’s (DCAI) efforts to position Dubai as a global leader in AI adoption in the public sector.
Launched in June 2023 by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, the DCAI aims to prepare government entities for the technological advancements that will shape the future and enhance their ability to provide innovative services. During the AI Majlis, His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, stressed the importance of collaboration and knowledge exchange among government entities.
According to Al Olama, “Government entities must be thoroughly prepared for technological advancements that will change how they operate and provide services. A high level of future readiness is critical to meeting the needs of stakeholders and capitalizing on the opportunities that emerge as a result of rapid AI development.”
One key aspect highlighted during the gathering was the development of legislation and regulatory frameworks that support the integration of AI into government systems. These frameworks will enhance the flexibility and efficiency of government entities, allowing them to develop innovative services that meet the evolving needs of their stakeholders.
In addition to collaboration and legislative support, fostering a culture of innovation and creativity is essential. Participants emphasized the need to support young talent in the field of AI and encourage individuals to adopt novel ideas for utilizing AI in their work. By nurturing this culture, Dubai aims to attract the best global solutions and support promising national talent.
The DCAI has been actively driving AI adoption through various programs. One such program is an accelerator program that recently concluded, involving 30 companies from 13 countries. Over the course of eight weeks, these companies worked in AREA 2071 to develop more than 300 projects tackling over 100 different challenges proposed by Dubai’s government entities. As a result of this program, 72 collaborative AI projects will be developed between government agencies and participating companies.
The future is at the heart of the DCAI’s mission. The center, supervised by the Dubai Future Foundation, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, the Government of Dubai Media Office, and the Dubai Digital Authority, is dedicated to preparing Dubai’s government entities to employ future technologies and ensure future readiness.
With their focus on collaboration, knowledge exchange, legislation, and talent development, Dubai is well on its way to unlocking the potential of AI in the government sector. By embracing AI and fostering innovation, Dubai is positioning itself as a leader in the global AI landscape. As His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama puts it, “We must embrace AI and leverage its potential to shape a better future for all.”
