Toronto-based company POET Technologies Inc. (“POET”) is collaborating with Foxconn Interconnect Technology (“FIT”), a global leader in interconnect solutions, to develop high-speed optical transceiver modules for next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) systems. FIT has selected POET’s silicon photonics integrated circuits (PICs), known as optical engines, for its 800G and 1.6T optical transceiver modules. The collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for cutting-edge AI applications and high-speed data center networks.
FIT’s expertise in transceiver design and manufacturing, combined with POET’s hybrid-integration platform technology, will enable the development of pluggable optical transceivers using best-of-breed components. Dr. Suresh Venkatesan, POET’s Chairman and CEO, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that FIT’s ability to ramp up production to high volume will be instrumental in the project’s success.
POET’s transmit and receive optical engines integrate various components, such as modulated lasers, drivers, photodiodes, and optical waveguides, on an optical interposer-based PIC. The components are passively assembled on the interposer at wafer scale, a hallmark of POET’s technology. The company expects to complete the design of the optical engines for FIT by Q3 2024 and commence production at its joint venture, Super Photonics Xiamen, by Q4 2024.
According to market forecasts by Lightcounting Market, the global optical transceiver market for 800G and 1.6T speed is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 33%, reaching $10.5 billion by 2029. The collaboration between POET and FIT positions them well to capitalize on this substantial market growth.
POET Technologies specializes in integration solutions based on its proprietary POET Optical Interposer™. The platform allows for the seamless integration of electronic and photonic devices into a single multi-chip module, reducing costs and improving scalability. This integration scheme is highly valuable in computing sectors such as AI, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, and high-speed networking for cloud service providers and data centers.
With headquarters in Toronto and operations in Allentown, PA, Shenzhen, China, and Singapore, POET Technologies is well-positioned to serve the growing global demand for advanced integration solutions. For more information about POET Technologies, visit their website at www.poet-technologies.com.
