South Korea is ready to revolutionize its education system with a massive $70 million investment in AI-powered learning. The government aims to improve digital infrastructure and develop digital textbooks for public schools, starting with third and fourth-graders at elementary schools and first-grade students at middle and high schools.
The goal behind this ambitious project is to alleviate the burden on schools and teachers when it comes to administrating and managing digital infrastructure. To prepare for the implementation of AI-powered digital textbooks, the Education Ministry will provide 60 billion won to 6,000 schools this year for enhancing network conditions. This includes improving internet speed and overcoming network access obstacles.
By next year, the ministry plans to inspect the network conditions of an additional 6,000 schools, bringing the total to around 12,000 schools. As for human resources, the ministry will introduce 1,200 “digital tutors” who will provide technical support, such as equipment repairs and setups. This will help alleviate the additional burden on teachers and allow them to focus more on teaching.
But that’s not all. The ministry plans to establish technical support centers across metropolitan education offices to assist teachers with equipment operations and troubleshooting. Support teams will also be formed in each of the 17 provincial education departments to thoroughly investigate the management and utilization of digital devices in schools nationwide.
The government is taking the issue of safe device management seriously as well. They aim to establish guidelines on common standards, procedures, and methods for supplying, maintaining, and disposing of digital devices. Additionally, they will provide support to prevent students from being overexposed to digital media and block harmful information.
Lee Ju-ho, the deputy prime minister and minister of education, expressed his commitment to enhancing school digital infrastructure and minimizing the burden on teachers. He stated, “As we look ahead to the full-scale introduction of AI digital textbooks next year, we will do our best to raise the quality of school digital infrastructure and minimize the burden of management work for teachers.”
