Driving Canada’s AI Healthcare Revolution: $26M Funding Boost for Tech Companies
In a significant step towards revolutionizing healthcare with artificial intelligence (AI), Canadian healthcare-technology companies have received a massive funding boost of $25.8 million. This funding comes from DIGITAL Canada’s Global Innovation Cluster, a federally funded organization based in Vancouver, previously known as Digital Technology Supercluster. Since 2018, DIGITAL has been investing in co-investments with Canadian technology companies and has provided over $200 million in funding to deserving companies.
This funding announcement aligns with the Canadian government’s commitment to establish Canada as a global hub for AI. In April, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled a package of measures worth $2.4 billion, aimed at securing what he calls Canada’s AI advantage. The recent investments by DIGITAL further reinforce this commitment and propel the country’s healthcare sector towards an AI-driven future.
Two Vancouver-based companies have already benefited from DIGITAL’s investments. Gotcare, a healthcare platform, has received a $3.1 million initiative to enhance its capabilities with AI-driven patient-matching and in-home healthcare delivery. The funding will also support the development of AI-based predictive health monitoring, which will eventually turn into a marketable product. RxPx, led by Lynda Brown-Ganzert, a recipient of the BIV Influential Women in Business award, is another Vancouver company that has secured $10.5 million in co-investment from DIGITAL. This initiative aims to leverage AI to improve the completeness, success, and relevance of clinical trials by enhancing patient recruitment.
In addition to these Vancouver companies, DIGITAL has made investments in ventures across Canada. One such investment is a co-investment of $9 million in Swift Medical, a company with offices in Toronto and Chicago. Swift Medical plans to utilize the funding to develop AI tools for standardized and improved care assessments in wound treatment. By using AI-based technologies, Swift Medical aims to identify different wound types and create precise 3D models, simplifying treatment in healthcare settings. Montreal-based AlayaCare is another recipient of DIGITAL’s funding, with a $3.2 million investment to introduce the first large-language-model-based smart AI assistant for home-based care.
The excitement surrounding AI in the healthcare sector has been palpable for quite some time. In fact, AI was BIV’s newsmaker of 2023, showcasing the industry’s growing interest and potential. OpenAI’s launch of ChatGPT, its free, publicly available chatbot, in November 2022, further fueled investors' enthusiasm for AI technology. Numerous companies in British Columbia are leveraging generative AI to drive their businesses forward.
This enthusiasm for AI is not limited to Canadian startups and investors. Global tech giant Nvidia Corp. reported impressive quarterly earnings, further affirming the immense potential of AI. Nvidia, known for its semiconductor chips designed for AI platforms, witnessed a 461% increase in earnings per share compared to the same quarter last year. Its revenue also rose by a staggering 262% to $26 billion. Following the announcement, Nvidia’s shares experienced a boost of more than six percent in after-hours trading.
The Canadian healthcare sector’s infusion of significant funding for AI-driven innovations is an important milestone towards transforming the industry. With companies like Gotcare, RxPx, Swift Medical, and AlayaCare at the forefront of AI adoption, Canada is poised to leverage the power of AI to improve patient care, treatment outcomes, and overall efficiency in the healthcare ecosystem. The partnerships between innovative startups and organizations like DIGITAL Canada’s Global Innovation Cluster showcase the country’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI-driven healthcare solutions.
The future of healthcare in Canada is being shaped by groundbreaking technologies, and AI is undeniably at the forefront. As the projects funded by DIGITAL come to fruition, we can expect more breakthroughs, advancements, and a truly transformative healthcare experience for all Canadians.
