In a groundbreaking collaboration, Atmo, Inc., a leading AI meteorology startup, has joined forces with the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) and the government of Tuvalu to deliver advanced AI-based weather forecasts for the Pacific island nation. This partnership represents a significant milestone, showcasing the potential of AI technology to address the pressing challenges of climate change and help vulnerable communities build resilience.

Tuvalu, like many other small island nations, faces immediate and existential threats from the climate crisis, particularly rising sea levels. The new AI weather forecast for Tuvalu is set to be up to 100 times more detailed and 50 percent more accurate than traditional meteorology, with updates occurring every few minutes rather than hours. This level of precision and timeliness is crucial for enabling Tuvalu to protect its citizens and infrastructure from extreme weather events associated with climate change.

H.E. Dr. Maina Talia, Minister of Home Affairs, Climate Change and Environment of Tuvalu, expressed the importance of accurate weather forecasts in addressing the impacts of climate change. He stated, “The launch of this project is a vital step forward for Tuvalu, providing us with the tools to take on a leading role in the Pacific when it comes to predicting and responding to the severe impacts of climate change. Accurate and timely weather forecasts are essential in our fight against climate impacts, particularly efforts to address the existential threats of sea-level rise.”

Over the next ten years, Atmo will provide Tuvalu with advanced AI weather forecasting capabilities previously used by organizations such as the United States Air Force. The company will also offer training to local personnel and integrate the forecasts into the nation’s disaster management and climate adaptation strategies for local communities.

Alex Levy, CEO and co-founder of Atmo, emphasized the disproportionate impact of climate change on small island nations like Tuvalu. He stated, “Equipping the government of Tuvalu with more detailed, accurate, and timely weather forecasting allows its leaders to make crucial decisions that safeguard citizens and prolong their time on the islands. The people of Tuvalu are strong and resilient, and we are honored to help protect their homeland with AI meteorology technology.”

Atmo combines real-time data from millions of weather sensors, satellites, and radars with over 60 years of historical data to create ultra-precise AI weather prediction models that continuously self-correct using real weather measurements. This continuous improvement process ensures that the forecasts become more accurate over time. With the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events, the need for precise forecasting has never been more critical.

Kamal Amakrane, Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility, highlighted the significance of this initiative for disaster risk management and response. He said, “By leveraging advanced AI weather forecasts, we can enhance local capacity, enabling communities to anticipate and plan for climate-related challenges more effectively. This partnership strengthens Tuvalu’s resilience and sets a precedent on how innovative technology can be harnessed to support vulnerable regions worldwide.”

The Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) plays a crucial role in enabling positive adaptation journeys for communities at the frontline of the climate crisis. Through the Rising Nations Initiative (RNI), the GCCM supports Pacific Atoll countries, including Tuvalu, in their efforts to protect their sovereignty and statehood, as well as the rights and heritage of affected populations in the face of climate change-related sea-level rise.

Tuvalu, with its nine islands and atolls located in the Pacific Ocean, is among the smallest and least populous countries globally. The nation’s total land area is approximately 26 square kilometers, with its highest elevation standing at just 4.6 meters above sea level. This low-lying geography puts Tuvalu at significant risk from rising sea levels caused by climate change.
