China-based tech giant Tencent Holdings has unveiled its Oracle Bones Corpus, an AI-powered platform and database dedicated to deciphering inscriptions found on oracle bones. Oracle bones, which date back around 3,600 years, were used for divination in ancient China. Tencent’s platform uses AI tools to improve the efficiency and accuracy of character recognition in studying the inscriptions. The platform aims to collect digitised versions of the oracle bones, including photos, 3D models, and Chinese ink rubbings, making them easier to compare for researchers. The system also establishes an index of characters to speed up searches and uses a feature called “indentation highlight” to enhance visualisation of the oracle bones. Tencent’s initiative highlights the company’s commitment to utilising advanced technologies for cultural and scientific purposes. The Oracle Bones Corpus is expected to contribute to our understanding of early Chinese civilisation and the evolution of the country’s language.
