It involves a scanning system positioned at store exits that captures images of customers' shopping carts and verifies payment for all items within a member’s basket. The AI-powered system has already been rolled out to 20% of Sam’s Club stores, and the company plans to have it in all 600 locations by the end of 2024.

According to Sam’s Club, this new technology has already made a significant impact. In the 120 stores where the AI scanners have been deployed, over half of the customers have been able to use them, resulting in a 23% reduction in wait times for all members. This rapid deployment of AI exit technology is being hailed as the largest-scale implementation of member-facing AI-powered technology in the retail industry.

Sam’s Club wasted no time in highlighting the challenges faced by its competitors in implementing similar technology. In its announcement, the company took digs at unnamed retailers, stating, “The retailer’s announcement of reaching the milestone of deploying at 20% of its clubs in the first quarter comes as other retailers have struggled to deploy similar technology at scale.”

This new AI technology not only streamlines the customer’s experience by eliminating the need for manual receipt checks but also allows Sam’s Club associates to spend more time assisting customers rather than manning the exits. It’s a win-win situation for both customers and employees.
