In a bid to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) computing capabilities, Apple has reportedly approached long-term partner Foxconn about building AI servers in Taiwan. The tech giant is seeking to use its proprietary Apple M-series silicon chips to power its latest generation of devices, including iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Foxconn’s current capacity may not be sufficient to accommodate Apple’s request, given its existing commitments as a primary manufacturer of Nvidia’s AI servers. However, Apple hopes that partnering with Foxconn in Taiwan will enable it to tap into the engineering talent and R&D resources associated with Nvidia projects.

“One of the reasons Apple wants Foxconn to make servers in Taiwan is in the hope to tap the engineering talent and R&D resources that work for the Nvidia projects,” said a source.

While Apple is aiming to produce the servers for its own use, the volume required is expected to be relatively low compared to the large-scale demand for Nvidia’s powerful GB200 AI servers. As Apple has limited experience in server design, particularly for data centers, it will likely require additional engineering and design support from its suppliers.

In addition to Foxconn, Apple is reportedly in talks with other partners to assist with certain server designs. Lenovo’s subsidiary LCFC is one potential collaborator. The negotiations also include exploring new production capacities outside of China, particularly in Southeast Asia, and potentially collaborating with smaller suppliers like Universal Scientific Industrial for production services.

While companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google are making significant investments in AI data centers, Apple is working to catch up as its Apple Intelligence features roll out to new devices. This push to enhance its AI capabilities underscores the company’s growing need for expanded data center infrastructure.

Apple’s intentions and potential partnerships have not yet been confirmed publicly. Foxconn and Universal Scientific Industrial declined to comment on the matter, while Apple and Lenovo have yet to respond to requests for comment.
