OpenAI and Common Sense Media launch free AI training course for teachers

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an increasingly prominent tool in various industries, including education. However, with its rapidly advancing capabilities, there is a need to demystify AI and educate teachers on how to effectively and responsibly incorporate it into their classrooms. In an exciting development, OpenAI and non-profit organization Common Sense Media have partnered to launch a free training course specifically designed for teachers.

The course aims to provide teachers with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the world of AI and prompt engineering. This partnership comes as OpenAI seeks to showcase the positive impact of its ChatGPT chatbot in education. Since its launch in November 2022, ChatGPT has become one of the world’s fastest-growing applications, generating humanlike content by leveraging vast amounts of data. Students have utilized ChatGPT to assist them in a wide range of academic tasks, from crafting term papers to completing science homework and even writing entire novels.

However, the unexpected emergence of ChatGPT as a potential tool for cheating and plagiarism has presented challenges for teachers. The chatbot’s arrival in the middle of the school year caught educators off-guard, prompting concerns about academic integrity and ensuing school bans. Recognizing the need for responsible AI use in education, OpenAI has formed a dedicated team led by former Coursera executive Leah Belsky.

Belsky, now responsible for promoting the responsible use of AI in education and learning at OpenAI, expressed her vision to put AI into the hands of every student and teacher. She emphasized the importance of equipping them with the necessary skills to employ AI responsibly and effectively. Belsky noted that ChatGPT has garnered high student adoption rates, with parents recognizing AI skills as essential for future career success.

The training course, tailored to kindergarten through 12th grade teachers, demonstrates various use cases for the ChatGPT chatbot in education. Teachers will learn how to leverage the chatbot to create engaging lesson content and streamline department meetings. This course, available on Common Sense Media’s website, marks the beginning of OpenAI’s partnership with the non-profit organization.

Teachers who complete the training course will emerge with a deeper understanding of AI and its potential applications in the classroom. By empowering educators with the necessary knowledge and skills, this program aims to ensure the responsible and effective integration of AI in education. With the rapid development and adoption of AI, it is crucial for teachers to stay informed and equipped to guide their students in embracing this technology for learning.
